At the center of the captivating rolling fields, resided a boy named Shepherd. His being was untarnished, simple yet virtuous. His main role was mainly to care for his flock of ewes.
Their low murmuring and the rustling of the gales through the lone tree on the peak were his only co-dwellers. Day after day, looking out for his charges inculcated in him a feeling of tranquil contentment.
However, there were the occasional moments of isolation, when the shepherd boy would pine for companionship. On one such day out of sheer tedium, the shepherd boy devised a troublesome plan.
Tales of wolves preying on sheep had long been read more circulating in the village. So, the boy chose to exploit this fear and played a joke on the townsfolk.
One day he raced into the village yelling “Wolf! There is a wolf preying on my sheep!” The scared villagers rushed up the hills to offer assistance but discovered no wolf.
The boy chuckled at the puzzle on their faces. This game persisted for a few days more. But, one day, a real wolf actually come to prey the herd. The shepherd boy ran for aid screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one showed up.
Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against the wolf but could protect only few of his sheep. Devastated, he went back to the village only to receive a lesson on honesty and the results of dishonesty.
The story of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the value of honesty, the consequences of lying and the risks of false alarms. Moreover, it highlights how trust once broken, is hard to regain. It's a story as relevant today as it was anciently.
